Why the Algarve?
With over 300 days of sunshine a year, dramatic sea cliffs, hidden sea caves, and some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, the Algarve earns every bit of its reputation. After four years of living in Portugal and driving this coastline dozens of times, we still find new things to love about it.
Best Places to Visit
Lagos
Our favourite base in the Algarve. Lagos has it all — a beautiful old town, incredible beaches, great restaurants, and the right size to feel lively without being overwhelming. Praia Dona Ana and Meia Praia are our top beach picks nearby.
Sagres & Cabo de São Vicente
The southwestern tip of Portugal — historically the edge of the known world. Sagres is windswept and dramatic, with a stunning fortress and world-class surf breaks. Cabo de São Vicente at sunset is one of Portugal's most memorable views.
Tavira
The Algarve's best-kept secret. Quieter, more authentic, and architecturally stunning — whitewashed houses, Roman bridges, and a laid-back pace. Take the ferry to the barrier island beaches for a uniquely peaceful experience.
Albufeira
The most touristy spot in the Algarve — great for families and beach resorts, but not really our scene. The beaches around Albufeira are gorgeous, but for a more authentic experience, base yourself closer to Lagos or Tavira.
Best Beaches in the Algarve
- Praia da Marinha — often ranked one of Europe's most beautiful beaches. The rock formations are extraordinary.
- Praia do Camilo — a hidden gem near Lagos with dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear water.
- Meia Praia — long, wide, and great for families and early morning walks.
- Praia de Odeceixe — where a river meets the ocean. Magical at low tide and popular with surfers.
Best Time to Visit
Our honest recommendation is May–June or September–October. The water is warm, the beaches are far less crowded than in July–August, and prices are significantly lower. If you're going in summer, book everything at least 3 months in advance. Winter in the Algarve is mild (15–18°C) and great for hiking and exploring coastal towns crowd-free.
Getting There & Around
Faro Airport (FAO) is the main gateway, with direct flights from most major European cities. A rental car is strongly recommended — public transport in the Algarve is very limited outside Faro and Lagos.
Insider Tips
- Drive the N125 coastal road rather than the motorway — slower but far more scenic, with stunning viewpoints along the way.
- Try percebes (barnacles) at a local restaurant — a true Algarve delicacy that tastes like the ocean.
- Sunset at Ponta da Piedade near Lagos is unmissable. Arrive 30 minutes early to get a good spot on the clifftops.
- Avoid Albufeira's Strip in July and August — it becomes a full tourist circus.
