A Guide to Aljezur & the Silver Coast, Portugal

Aljezur and the Silver Coast (Costa Vicentina) are Portugal's best-kept secret — a wild, windswept stretch of Atlantic coastline where dramatic cliffs meet endless empty beaches. Part of the Alentejo and Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, this region is paradise for surfers, hikers, and anyone craving raw, unspoiled nature.

Portugal's Wild West: The Silver Coast

While the Algarve gets most of the attention in southern Portugal, just around the corner lies something entirely different. The Silver Coast (also called the Costa Vicentina) stretches along Portugal's southwest Atlantic edge — and it's one of the most beautiful and undeveloped coastlines in all of Western Europe. Protected by national park status, this region has resisted mass tourism and remains refreshingly wild.

Aljezur is the main town in this area — a charming hilltop village with a ruined Moorish castle, whitewashed houses, and a remarkably laid-back surf culture.

The Beaches of the Silver Coast

The beaches here are simply extraordinary. Vast, powerful, and often deserted even in summer — these are the kind of beaches that make you feel like you've discovered something secret.

  • Praia de Odeceixe: Perhaps the most stunning — a river meets the sea in a sheltered bay surrounded by cliffs. One of Portugal's most unique beach landscapes.
  • Praia de Amoreira: Wide, wild, and backed by sand dunes and a river estuary. Popular with surfers but never overcrowded.
  • Praia do Monte Clérigo: A beautiful sheltered cove with golden sand and dramatic rock formations.
  • Praia de Arrifana: A classic surf beach with towering cliffs on either side. One of the best surf breaks on the entire coast.

Surfing the Silver Coast

The Silver Coast is one of Europe's top surf destinations. The Atlantic swells here are powerful and consistent, making it a magnet for surfers of all levels. Aljezur has several excellent surf schools offering lessons and board rentals. Even if you're a beginner, the instructors here are used to working with all abilities.

Hiking the Rota Vicentina

The Rota Vicentina is a network of walking trails connecting the Silver Coast and Alentejo coast. The two main routes — the Fishermen's Trail (Trilho dos Pescadores) and the Historical Way (Caminho Histórico) — offer some of the most spectacular coastal walking in Europe. The Fishermen's Trail in particular hugs the clifftops and beaches for stretches that are simply breathtaking.

Aljezur Town

Don't overlook the town itself. The hilltop old quarter (with its ruined castle offering great views) is picturesque and tranquil. The market town has a weekly farmers' market, several excellent cafes and restaurants, and a small but thriving community of artists, surfers, and digital nomads who've made this corner of Portugal their home.

What to Eat

The Silver Coast region is particularly known for its sweet potato (batata-doce de Aljezur has protected designation of origin status). Try them roasted, in soups, or even in sweets. The seafood here is also exceptional — fresh-caught and simply prepared. Don't miss the local cataplana (a slow-cooked seafood and vegetable stew).

Getting There

Aljezur is best reached by car. The nearest major airport is Faro (about 1.5 hours away), or Lagos (about 45 minutes). There are some bus connections from Lagos and Portimão, but having your own transport gives you the freedom to explore the coast's scattered beaches and trails at your own pace.

Practical Tips

  • The water here is colder than the Algarve — the Atlantic swells come straight from the north. A wetsuit is often a good idea even in summer.
  • Book accommodation early in summer — this region is increasingly popular and the best places fill up fast.
  • The Rota Vicentina website has excellent maps and trail information: rotavicentina.com.
  • Aljezur's weekly market (Tuesday mornings) is worth timing your visit around.
